The Wild Spaces and Public Places sales tax doesn’t just mean conserving more land. It also means more spending money for local governments on long-awaited projects. Back in November, locals voted in favor of the half-cent sales tax, which will generate nearly $130 million over its 8-year span. The city of Gainesville is expected to see $46.5 million of the funds for its plans, but has several identified projects outside and within city limits, which blend with the county’s plans. On Thursday, Gainesville commissioners resolved that issue by unanimously approving an interlocal agreement for distribution of revenue from the half-cent initiative, partnering with Alachua County for potential joint projects. The move will provide Gainesville with $3 million from the county’s funding, while also allowing county officials to provide another $3 million to fund a partnership program with municipalities in Alachua County, as well as Gainesville.
