LAND O’ LAKES — As Pasco commissioners prepare to discuss a proposed ordinance Tuesday aimed at cleaning up blighted buildings on the county’s main roadways, some signs of progress already are visible.
The owner of a condemned, two-story building on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard currently is demolishing the structure.
“I’ve talked to the owner and he thinks it should be clear in 45 days,” Commissioner Mike Moore said. “It would be great to see something new and inviting there. And it will be nice for people driving by and not to have to see that eyesore every day.”
In June, Moore asked County Attorney Jeffrey Steinsnyder to draft an ordinance that would penalize owners of commercial buildings for failing to maintain their properties. He wants to model the code on a Hillsborough County ordinance that was enacted in 2009; it would apply to properties on major roadways such as U.S. 19, U.S. 301 and U.S. 41.
