Historic downtown Sanford to get longer Riverwalk, more brick streets
A new wave of improvements is coming to Sanford’s historic downtown, known for its old brick buildings and a scenic walkway along Lake Monroe that gives pedestrians and bicyclists expansive views of the waterfront.
To draw more shoppers and diners downtown, the city is planning nearly $9 million worth of upgrades that include:
•Extending the Riverwalk nearly a mile west from U.S. Highway 17-92 to just past Central Florida Regional Hospital. The project will nearly double the length of the promenade.
•Building a concrete dock with 10 boat slips on Lake Monroe near Veterans Memorial Park, allowing boaters to sail into Sanford and tie up for the day.
•Replacing the asphalt on Sanford Avenue between First and Sixth streets with bricks. The work also will include widening sidewalks and adding decorative streetlights.
