The developer behind the proposed $158-million, mixed-use project near Cascades Park wants community input on history tied to the site so that stories from the past may be part of the project’s future.
The project includes Firestone and Bloxham Annex buildings, stretching across two city blocks downtown. The Bloxham building is slated for the preservation efforts for the old Leon County Jail, where local civil rights icons were jailed. It may also include a historical nod to the former Leon County Health Unit, one of the first in the state with an interracial staff, employed a large number of black residents who lived in the nearby Smokey Hollow community.
