As the fifth-largest city in Florida and home to more than 250,000 residents, St. Petersburg is an active and mobile community.
We have a thriving downtown. We have an emerging Innovation District. We have art. We have sports. We have jobs by the thousands and the ability to grow more of them with smart planning.
And we have people who need to get to those jobs. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is working to improve transportation in and around St. Petersburg.
Recently, two public transportation options took major steps forward. The planned Bus Rapid Transit service from our downtown to the gulf beaches will soon become a reality thanks to the Florida Department of Transportation’s December funding announcement. The plan is to run quasi-express buses — ones with limited stops — every 15 minutes from 5 a.m. until midnight from the beaches to downtown destinations to give workers a viable alternative to cars. It will also appeal to millennials and international tourists who don’t expect to need cars.
