PLANT CITY – One of the city’s most historic schools is getting some attention from the school district.
A contractor has been replacing aging mortar and cement around the bricks at Esther D. Burney Elementary, 901 S. Evers St. The project started in June and will wrap up Friday, school district spokeswoman Kristin Waskiewicz said.
The district is spending a combined total of $425,779 for the improvements to Burney and similar work at Chamberlain High School in Tampa, she said. Waskiewicz didn’t have a specific breakdown for the cost of the work at Burney.
The two-story, red-brick school was built in 1923 and has served in a number of capacities, including a temporary home to Tomlin Junior High students while that campus was renovated.
It has been an elementary continuously for about 10 years now.
