A service that has grown popular in downtown Delray Beach for offering free rides with its fleet of electric carts is considering expanding to a new location: downtown Boca.
Since 2012, the Delray Downtowner has given rides to passengers across a two-mile radius of Delray’s downtown for free, except for what the passengers would like to tip the driver. People hail the cart either through an iPhone app or by calling its number.
And it has been a success, according to one of the proprietors, Stephen Murray. The Delray Downtowner now transports 16,000 riders a month and the number of six-seat, street-legal rechargeable carts has increased from three to 10 since the service got on the road, Murray said.
