Gainesville residents and visitors are a step closer to being able to navigate the streets on rented electric scooters. The City Commission voted on the first read of an ordinance regulating “dockless electric scooters” last week. The vote was to adopt the permit program that would allow the scooters, called “micromobility devices” by city officials, to operate in the city, said Malisa McCreedy, Gainesville director of mobility. McCreedy said the city does not yet have a timeline for when the scooters will be up and running. The second reading of the ordinance will be on April 2, and vendors will be able to apply for permits six weeks later. The trial period will begin at some point after that. The permit application will require vendors to detail education and safety plans.
