To encourage redevelopment on six thoroughfares in the Bradenton area, the Manatee County Commission took an initial step Tuesday by amending its long-range land-use plan to allow significant increases in potential homes per acre and square footages for offices and retail.
The intent is to encourage redevelopment of declining properties, such as vacant shopping centers, possibly with mixed-use developments, such as complexes with apartments above stores in walkable settings.
The revisions apply only to properties with frontage on stretches of 14th Street West, 15th Street East, 53rd Avenue West (State Road 70), Cortez Road, Manatee Avenue West and First Street (U.S. 41).
