A watershed moment for Sarasota’s bayfront and our region’s cultural icons could occur Monday.
Leaders of Bayfront 20:20, a local movement that has steadily gained community support, will brief the City Commission on its initiative’s status — and seek tentative support for additional steps aimed at proposing a plan for preserving open space on Sarasota Bay and creating top-notch venues for arts, culture, entertainment and recreation.
The undertaking has gained the endorsement of 48 diverse, local organizations — neighborhood associations, business groups and cultural and educational entities. The work, which has occurred with the aid of a national consultant paid with private funds, has been process-oriented. The focus has been on identifying principles intended to guide planning for the future use of 42 city-owned waterfront acres that include the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the Sarasota Orchestra headquarters and an array of civic buildings and spaces.
