An added layer of security has been added to the Historic Downtown Melbourne district, aimed at making visitors feel safer with the addition of a new private security company. The City of Melbourne and the Melbourne Police Department have collaborated with Melbourne Main Street, downtown businesses, and property owners to create an enhanced security plan.
Starting this month, the new security company will focus on New Haven Avenue from U.S. 1 westward to McQuaid Street. An unarmed, uniformed security officer will patrol the area on foot Tuesday through Sunday, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to a city press release.
The officer, identified as Security Officer Constant, will be assisting with quality-of-life enforcement issues, such as noise, blocked sidewalks, interference with customers, trespassing, graffiti, and aggressive panhandling. The officer will contact the police for incidents requiring law enforcement and will file an activity report after each shift.
The new security service will also cover Campbell Park, Melbourne Court, Homes Park, and the Crane Creek Promenade.
The $23,000 cost of the program is being funded by the City of Melbourne Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).
