The city is going to take a $5.65 million hit to give residents and business owners a financial break, and to nudge along development as so much in the economy is freezing up amid the coronavirus pandemic. At a special meeting Tuesday night, city commissioners approved waiving a significant portion of residents’ utility bills for one month, suspending building permit fees for the next 90 days and temporarily waiving commercial tenants’ rents at city-owned facilities. City residents will still receive utility bills next month, but they’ll only have to pay the charges for storm water, solid waste and landfill fees. A credit will be shown on customers’ bills for the amount they normally would have paid for water, sewer, recycling, and a public service tax.
