University of Florida Landscape Architecture students presented an ambitious, pie-in-the-sky dream future for the heart of Live Oak.
In a presentation to the Community Redevelopment Agency on Monday, the nine students emphasized better connectivity, more walkability and utilizing plants and unused spaces.
Each student had an area of Live Oak they focused on. Bryce Donner focused on Heritage Square, the area of land north of the railroad tracks that the CRA purchased last year. He created a wood model of what Heritage Square could look like.
The model showed an expansive park area bordering the railroad right-of-way with a pedestrian-only walking path through a district meant for small businesses. Haynes Street would essentially be cut out and replaced by a parking lot to allow people access to the square.
With the water tower, fire station and museum all in that area, Donner said it showed Live Oak’s history on the outside, but failed to let people gain access to it. He said he wanted to integrate those building and create a cultural hub.
