Boynton Beach Boulevard is the city’s entryway, but the buildings that line it are outdated — the only destinations that might attract an interest to stop are City Hall and the post office — and the street’s structure emphasizes vehicle use over walking or riding a bike, the Community Redevelopment Agency says.
And it’s time to change.
This past week, the city’s commission, sitting as the CRA board, made a first step in that direction. The commissioners agreed to pay about $560,000 to Kimley-Horn and Associates for the construction design phase of a streetscape improvement project. The project will be along the boulevard from Interstate 95 east to Federal Highway.
Construction is a long way away — there’s not even a date set. But, an opportunity for public input will come soon.
Before the design is approved, the company must present engineering proposals to the CRA advisory board — comprised of residents and not elected officials. The advisory board will give their recommendations to the CRA board, which will sign off on the proposal.
Mayor Steven Grant expects a proposal within the next few months.
“The commission knows Boynton Beach Boulevard needs improvement, so we are starting to put the process forward,” said Mayor Steven Grant. “It’s very important as in that this is our brand street. Boynton Beach Boulevard is the brand street of Boynton Beach. We want to create it as a premiere street throughout the county as it represents the city.”
