BROOKSVILLE – As one of their last officials acts, the Hernando County Commission this week awarded Len Sossamon a four-year contract extension as county administrator and economic development director, much to the chagrin of a few government watchdogs and the two new commissioners who take office next month. The action, backed by strong words from sitting commissioners and critics, likely means that Sossamon is safe in his current jobs until Commissioner Jeff Holcomb, who has been gone on military leave for the last several months, returns. It is unclear when that will happen. Two sitting commissioners, Wayne Dukes and Nick Nicholson, strongly support Sossamon, and the two new commissioners who will be sworn in in December, John Allocco and Steve Champion, have raised questions about Sossamon’s future in one or both of those jobs. Without a fifth commissioner to break a tie vote, nothing can be done to change Tuesday’s commission action.
