While Hernando County officials have voiced concern that a proposed waste-to-energy project could cost taxpayers millions of dollars over the life of the project, the attorney representing the company that would build the plant told commissioners this week that it would instead save the county more than $1 million a year. County commissioners said they were ready to make a final decision on the idea at their meeting next week. Attorney Jake Varn, representing Freedom Energy Hernando, the chosen contractor for the project, told commissioners that he had met with Brian Malmberg, assistant county administrator, and that the new numbers show that the county could save $1.2 million per year by moving forward with the project. The plan would give tipping fees now collected by the county to run the landfill to Freedom Energy, and Freedom Energy would build a system that would turn municipal waste into pellets that would be an energy source.
