Depot Park lives up to the hype.
The 32-acre project has been billed as being Gainesville’s own Central Park. Depot Park is supposed to serve as a showcase for all our community offers in terms of nature, culture and innovation.
It took decades of planning, years of cleanup and millions of dollars to get there, but the fences around the park are finally coming down. Monday is scheduled to be the park’s soft opening, to be followed by a grand-opening event on Aug. 20.
Based on a sneak peek of the park, I can happily report that Depot Park lives up to the expectations. It offers one of the best playgrounds in Florida as well as a place to celebrate the history, cultural offerings and environmental commitment of our community. It will likely be Gainesville’s most popular gathering place outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
The playground is an example of how much thought was put into the park. In addition to including entertainment for children of all ages and abilities, the playground tells a story.
