ST. PETERSBURG — A historic downtown bank, vacant for two decades, could become the cornerstone of an eight-story apartment and retail building.
The city’s Community Planning and Preservation Commission approved a proposal Tuesday that would preserve the original 1926 Union Trust Co. building at 801 Central Ave. but demolish additions made in 1938 and 1967.
The development proposed by Art Village I LLC would put a four-story apartment building atop the original bank building and tie that in to an eight-story building that would cover the rest of the block on the east side. The new building would have stucco, glass and decorative walls easily distinguishable from the bank’s neoclassical revival style.
