A proposal to build hundreds of affordable rental units near downtown Sarasota stirred promising discussion this week. Questions about the plan still await clearer answers, but perhaps what’s needed most of all, at this early stage, is a positive mindset by local government. Officials should look for ways to help mold this project into an excellent example of problem solving.
The problem, of course, is the shortage of housing priced within reach of low-wage workers — the backbone of the local economy. The problem is not limited to the city; it extends through most of the region.
Easing the gap is a challenge that warrants regionwide efforts. But because of development density, transportation options, proximity to jobs and such, locations near the downtown can be particularly well suited to work-force housing. The project, discussed in a community workshop this week, fits that description.
