SARASOTA – The city and county both desperately want something from each other, but it’s unlikely either will get its wish.
For the city, it’s an extension of the Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency, which has funneled $76 million into projects in Newtown and the urban core. Commissioners voiced unanimous approval for extending it — perhaps even to 2046 — but without Sarasota County approval the CRA will expire in September 2016.
Meanwhile, the county is prodding city leaders to approve a contentious come-as-you-are, always-open adult homeless shelter near downtown. City commissioners bristled at the idea Monday.
The city did not take action on either of those issues Monday night as both were labeled discussion items on the agenda.
