TAVARES — City officials are poised to start a worldwide search for developers and investors to build a recreation, retail and entertainment square in downtown, adjacent to City Hall.
The plaza dubbed “Tavares Square” would take over the property of the clerk of courts’ Public Records Center, which the city agreed to buy from Lake County for about $1 million.
“We’re trying to create a destination to our downtown,” said City Administrator John Drury. “I’ve always felt that each city in the area has to maintain its own character. We’re going to be an entertainment district.”
City council members voted unanimously at a meeting earlier this month to authorize staffers to solicit proposals requesting design, theme and perspective ideas to develop the property.
