Gainesville is considering setting up a Community Redevelopment Area in a northwestern part of the city that includes the Koppers Superfund site, a move that could bolster efforts to improve that troubled sector.
The Koppers site, Gainesville High School, Stephen Foster Elementary School, nearby shopping centers and the city’s Public Works Complex all fall within the proposed boundaries, according to a map of the area.
Local governments can create CRAs in order to address blight and other problems. Increases in tax revenue generated by rising property values there are designated for use within that district on various improvement efforts such as streetlights and landscaping.
