DEBARY — With an eye toward speeding up development near the new SunRail station, the City Council this week established a brownfield area over the objections of at least one landowner.
A 4-1 council vote Wednesday reflected the majority support for the brownfield, an area designated for redevelopment after having real or perceived contamination. Brownfields provide state incentives to help lure jobs and development, but some question whether the label might do more harm.
The brownfield encompasses areas near the SunRail station, where a commuter train line is scheduled to start service in May. The boundaries stretch across both sides of U.S. 17-92 on the south end of the city and include the Springview Commerce and Benson Junction Industrial areas.
