Pines downtown city center starts to take shape
PEMBROKE PINES—
The dream of a downtown city center, first conceived nearly a decade ago and stalled by the 2008 recession, finally is starting to come true.
Once complete, the 80-acre site at Palm Avenue and Pines Boulevard will be home to more than 1,000 apartments, a multi-use civic center, a new city hall, an entertainment district that includes space for retail shops, restaurants and a hotel, as well as 120,000 square feet of office space.
The city approved a deal last week with luxury-developer Related Group to build 365 apartments at the prime location. Commissioners also gave staff the green light to look for builders to construct a 3,500-seat civic center on the property.
