DAYTONA BEACH — As the city comes alive with a massive redevelopment at Daytona International Speedway and the promise of two new oceanfront hotels, the 85-year-old Boardwalk is basking in a rebirth of its own by going back to its roots as an old-fashioned tourist attraction.
While the Speedway and hotel projects are all about 21st century modernization, the Boardwalk is finding its forte in yesteryear fun dedicated to simplicity.
Anyone who’s wondering if the Boardwalk’s Ferris wheel, clowns and newly restored pier are working can get their answer strolling the oceanfront path. Merchants say the crowds have mushroomed to their largest numbers in years, and families with small children have come back in force.
