The potential for downtown Margate is superior to that of “The Walk” in Coral Springs or “The Promenade” in Coconut Creek – places barely affordable for working entrepreneurs with fresh new ideas. Presently owned by the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency, Margate’s downtown is already here and is home to great restaurants with likely more on the way.
The unique aspect of the two downtown plazas – The Margate Shopping Center (aka Ace Hardware Plaza) on Margate Blvd and the Chevy Chase Plaza on State Road 7, is that the majority of business owners work in their own establishments. From barbers and beauty to hardware, collectibles, dance and professional services, the two plazas presently provide dozens of jobs for the local community and are home to scant few storefront vacancies.
Owned by taxpayers via the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency (MCRA) rents in the plazas are highly affordable, which enable start-up businesses to thrive and survive. The plazas are historical in nature and home to one of Margate’s first businesses. Pete’s Barbershop opened in 1956 – a year after the city was incorporated.
