Holiday Park is expanding as a recreation hub for residents and their four-legged friends. Two new attractions are slated for the east side locale.
The YMCA of South Florida plans to construct a new facility to serve the downtown community. And the city of Fort Lauderdale recently broke ground on a dog park.
The proposed YMCA will fill more than two acres of vacant land just west of the park boundary. The site is located on Federal Highway adjacent to the Parker Playhouse. The two venues will also share a parking lot.
The Fort Lauderdale City Commission unanimously voted to grant a 50-year lease for the site at $1 per year, according to law firm Shutts & Bowen. Its attorneys have advocated for the YMCA.
“The YMCA will provide tremendous benefits to the local community. It’s been almost 20 years since there has been a YMCA in the downtown area, and this project will continue the redevelopment and revitalization of downtown Fort Lauderdale,” said Jacqueline Howe, incoming YMCA board chairwoman and Shutts’ partner.
