Orlando leaders are working to help first responders live in the communities they serve, launching a new housing effort in Parramore through the Community Redevelopment Agency.
The city plans to sell eight newly built homes with down payment assistance, including an extra $10,000 for first responders. Officials say the goal is to strengthen connections between residents and those who serve them.
Many first responders, like Fire Lt. Ronald Huguenin, currently commute due to high housing costs. He says the program is appealing, though affordability remains a concern, with homes priced around $365,000 to $380,000.
City leaders, including the CRA and District 5 Commissioner Shan Rose, say the initiative is about more than homeownership. It is about building community ties and encouraging first responders to put down roots where they work.
