The Orange Avenue Apartments may look to be in good condition. But the units are tiny and connected by an out-dated system of lead pipes that often burst when faucets are turned on.
Redevelopment is overdue, according to the Tallahassee Housing Authority. Potential developers are being considered to create a master plan to bring new life to the community of Section 8 housing, which consists of 200 units on 29 acres.
The authority, the point agency for federal funding for public housing, issued a request for qualifications to gauge interest on who’d might take on the massive job. Seven proposals were submitted. Two development candidates have made the short list: Columbia Residential in Atlanta and Southport Financial Services in Tampa. The authority plans to make a decision on Wednesday.
