The days when the nine-story Sweet Building dominated the downtown skyline are long gone.
The 1926 office building at the north end of the Andrews Avenue Bridge was the city’s first skyscraper and downtown’s tallest structure for 46 years. Even its roof has history, serving as an observation post for enemy planes during World War II.
But the building, which survived the 1926 hurricane that ravaged the region, can no longer withstand the winds of progress. It will be torn down to make way for 4 West Las Olas — a 25-story structure featuring 261 apartments and more than 5,000 square feet of retail space.
