DEERFIELD BEACH Once a hotspot for gambling and bootlegging, a city park accessible only through a condominium parking lot has begun its transformation into a hub for enjoying the city’s Intracoastal Waterway.
Sullivan Park, once the site of the notorious Riverview Restaurant that legend has Al Capone frequenting, is on a frontage road tucked between the north side of Hillsboro Boulevard and condominiums. But some lucky breaks have led to a $3.9 million project city officials hope will lure kayakers, paddle boarders, walkers and families with children.
Work is underway on a splash playground, floating docks for boating rentals and a waterside walkway that includes what city officials call the best view of the Intracoastal Waterway in Broward County.
It’s quite a change from the shuffleboard that had been the park’s chief feature.
