Plan will promote safe travel and provide transportation solutions to support economic development
TAMPA, Fla. (July 12, 2016) – VHB, an engineering, environmental science, planning, and design firm with 23 offices along the East Coast, was chosen by the City of Naples, Florida to develop concept plans that promote economic development in downtown Naples through transportation improvements that enhance mobility and safety for all modes of travel.
The plan prepared by VHB, scheduled to be completed fall of 2017, will provide short and long-term transportation improvement recommendations for downtown Naples that support more walkable neighborhoods, and streets that enable safe access for all users with a wide range of housing and job types. VHB will be using “New Urbanism” and “Complete Streets” community design and planning principals to guide the final plan. VHB will also study the economic impacts of the current transportation system, determining how it positively or negatively affects property values, tax revenues, jobs, and tourism in the area.
Key to the study will be the collection of information from Downtown Naples stakeholders including Collier County, FOOT District 1, and the Collier MPO to build a detailed simulation analysis of the existing transportation network. VHB will use the simulation to identify the most beneficial transportation improvements, such as improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities, travel lanes, intersection designs and transit accessibility, and off-site improvements.
Brent Lacy, AICP will lead the project from VHB’s Tampa office, bringing more than four decades of experience in urban transportation planning, traffic and route location studies, downtown parking planning, growth management studies, and corridor operations throughout the state of Florida.
