NEW SMYRNA BEACH — Canal Street, once lingering in economic doldrums, is in full recovery mode, city officials and business owners say, and they want Volusia County Chair Jason Davis to know it.
Davis said last week that when he visits Canal Street, he doesn’t see renewed prosperity. He sees a lack of activity.
“All that Canal Street money we put in there and there’s no people in the streets,” Davis said during Thursday’s County Council meeting while discussing his frustrations with Community Redevelopment Areas and the money that’s pumped into them. “I go at 5 in the afternoon, 11 in the morning … and there are five or six people, usually in the same place.”
