NEW SMYRNA BEACH — The city’s 65-year old central fire station on Faulkner Street, seemingly slated for obsolescence, could be redeveloped for new homes and businesses.
Jack White, a partner with White Challis Redevelopment Co., said he’d like to reuse the building at 103 Faulkner St. as part of the company’s proposed downtown housing development Tabby House. The ground floor would be restored for retail or commercial, while the upstairs could be converted into one or two residential units, White said.
“It’s a solid building, it needs work,” White said. “I hope to be able to restore the building. That’s our first intention.”
White Challis doesn’t have a contract yet with the city to buy and develop the 1.4-acre lot for up to 18 homes. The deal points are scheduled to be discussed at a Jan. 28 City Commission meeting. White said he wouldn’t fully pursue plans to redevelop the fire station until the contract is signed.
